How we create bespoke pieces of jewellery
Initial consultation
Whether you want a bespoke engagement ring, eternity ring or another piece of fine jewellery, it all begins with an idea; this is where we establish your requirements and design must-haves – everything required to make a meaningful and treasured piece of jewellery. At this point you will be viewing existing pieces we have in store, seeing our gemstones or diamonds, and sketching out some ideas. The initial consultation is an important starting point for your unique piece of jewellery.
Specification & quoting
This is a thorough preparation of pricing and specification. This will take into account current prices for precious stones, white gold, yellow gold, platinum or sterling silver, and the complexity of work in store for our jewellery designers. Deposits are taken at this stage, before we proceed further. This ensures that we are on track with your requirements and enables us to further invest our time and expertise into your bespoke jewellery journey.
Design
Our senior designers get to work creating your bespoke jewellery design. We would, at this point, begin to order stones that match your brief and specification. We can then email you images of the design for approval once ready. Stones can also be viewed in store if required. A 3D-printed model of your item can also be provided, should you wish to view your design in 3D.
Casting & hallmarking
Our casting is completed in the world-famous jewellery quarter by our trusted partner. This process transforms 3D-printed wax models into precious metals. Hallmarking is completed in our partner UK Assay Offices of London and Sheffield. Our registered punches and unique Chichester Cross Marks will be stamped or lasered onto the inside of the ring, assuring your metal is of the desired fineness and giving you peace of mind.
Goldsmithing & assembly
Castings, claws and components are carefully filed, emery papered and pre-polished by expert craftsmen under magnification using hand tools and precise, high RPM micro-motors. Using a laser welder and various grades of precious metal solders, the components of your bespoke jewellery will then be assembled to form the unset ring mount or piece of jewellery.
Setting, Polishing & Quality Control
Stone setting takes place under a microscope, where diamonds and gemstones are meticulously set into the piece of jewellery. This exact work requires the utmost care and attention to detail. Our in-house setting team is respected throughout the industry for their work. Once the stone setting is complete a final polish is applied and then we move on to quality control for the final checks.

Handmade Jewellery
Handmade pieces from top bespoke jewellery designers.
For our most discerning clients who hold exclusivity, individuality and traditional craftsmanship among their highest values, we can create jewellery by hand using time-honoured skills and the finest attention to detail.
Please note that, due to the increased time required by our goldsmiths and stone setters, this will have a significant impact on both the cost and the turnaround time. Using only handmade techniques may take time but we guarantee superb quality in the finished piece of jewellery.
I had a custom silver necklace made for my wife of the name of our daughter. Chris made a custom font with my input, designed the pendant, and suggested different types of chain so as to suit my needs. The final piece was exactly what i had had in mind and of a very high quality. I will definitely go to Timothy Roe for any other jewellery in the future.Tom Goldsmid
Custom Jewellery
Our cutting-edge jewellery-making technology.
We frequently use traditional jewellery-making techniques supported by the latest technology.
Computer aided design
We were an early adopter of 3D modelling for bespoke jewellery, beginning in 2004. As a result, we have a vast wealth of experience, knowledge and skill on its appropriate use in the creation of jewellery. Using the same high-pedigree software as Swiss watch houses and CGI Artists worldwide, we can create both geometric and organic forms to suit any jewellery design style and level of detail – from the elegant curves of a signet ring to the ornate and detailed scrollwork of an Edwardian-style diamond pendant.
3D printing
Before going ahead and having a bespoke jewellery design cast into gold, platinum or palladium, we can print, in-house, a 3D model for you to view and try if you wish. The printer uses state-of-the-art SLA technology to grow the models from liquid resin, curing it layer by layer to form a solid model. 3D models ensure the custom-made jewellery is perfectly fitted.
3D scanning
This is the ideal tool for creating a shaped-to-fit wedding ring or tailoring a design to a uniquely shaped gemstone – our 3D scanner enables us to create the perfect fit. Scans can often be completed the same day within a few hours, getting your engagement ring back on your finger as soon as possible! Schedule an appointment for a 3D scan.
Our expertise
Time-honoured traditional skills & techniques.
Much of our bespoke jewellery gives a nod to tradition, so we always offer handmade, bespoke jewellery that feels authentic, well-crafted and has a sense of artisanal style.
Our bespoke jewellery designers will ensure the following elements are all completed to the highest standard:
Goldsmithing & mounting
Traditional bench skills are an essential element in making beautiful jewellery. Modern technology is excellent to have on hand, but without the knowledge, experience and skill of our goldsmiths and workshop team, truly exquisite bespoke jewellery cannot be realised.
Stone Setting
Meticulously carried out under a microscope, using the best pneumatic tools and gravers, our setters provide the finishing touch to your jewellery. They are experts in all types of stone setting, so you can be sure bespoke-made jewellery at Timothy Roe will be a cut above the rest, whether you decide on a grain, claw, pavé, flush, rub over, channel or cutaway setting.
Polishing & Finishing
Using a combination of the finest calico and swansdown mops, together with a variety of top quality polishing compounds (tripoli, rouge, dialux, luxi, menzerna super finish, polinum), we can achieve the highest level of finishing on your jewellery and ensure a brilliant shine. Other finishes include bead blasted and satin/brushed textures.
timeless quality
We only use the finest bespoke jewellery materials.
Precious metal alloys
We work with 9 ct, 14 ct, 18 ct and 22 ct gold alloys, alongside platinum and palladium alloys. 99% of our bespoke jewellery work (when using CAD/CAM) is custom made in an ethically sourced, fully recycled supply chain. We use specially imported solders for working with platinum (these solders have a higher platinum content than other solders available in the UK). Alongside our laser welders, this helps us to achieve the finest joins possible when combining components of your bespoke jewellery or adjusting a finger size.
